ABOUT THE ROLE
MightyFly is looking for an experienced Flight Test Engineer to join our team. This individual will be responsible for: designing and planning flight tests; ensuring the safe, timely, and accurate execution of the tests; analyzing and validating the results of the tests; and working with engineering teams to utilize the learnings gleaned from the tests. The Flight Test Engineer will work with members of all teams and will be a critical contributor to the success of the company. This person will also spend significant time working at test sites near Tracy, California, and potentially in other test sites across the United States.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Design and author ground and flight test plans for MightyFly’s autonomous cargo aircraft
- Execute and support test operations, including vehicle instrumentation, and real-time data monitoring
- Implement procedures for the collection, storage, organization, and retrieval of flight test data
- Analyze post-flight data to evaluate system performance, identify anomalies, and provide design feedback
- Collaborate across engineering teams to integrate and validate hardware and software systems
- While working on site at test sites, ensure flight test activities are conducted in compliance with FAA, company, and safety protocols
- Contribute to modeling and simulation efforts and compare predictive models to real-world performance
- Support risk assessments and readiness reviews for each test phase
- Help with FAA documentation
- Help with aircraft maintenance
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
Technical
- 4+ years of experience in flight test or a related aerospace engineering role
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Strong understanding of aircraft systems and flight test methodologies, especially for large autonomous aircraft (over 55 pounds)
- Proficiency with data acquisition and analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, etc.)
- Familiarity with UAS regulatory frameworks (e.g. powered lift, Part 107, experimental certification, etc.)
General
- A personal drive to build systems from the ground up
- A strong interest for tackling and solving complex problems
- Self-directed with the ability to work and thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Comfortable working in dynamic, outdoor, and high-tempo flight test environments
Planning & Partnering
- Experience developing flight test plans, test cards, and instrumentation setups
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, pilots, and technicians
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, especially for test results and regulatory compliance
Nice to have
- Master’s degree in a relevant engineering field
- 8+ years of experience in flight test, systems engineering, or aircraft integration, especially with VTOL or UAV systems
- Experience supporting DOD programs or working with government flight test centers
- Knowledge of flight safety processes and risk mitigation strategies
- Experience with real-time telemetry, sensor fusion, or flight simulation tools
- Private pilot license
- Aircraft maintenance experience
- Experience with towing and trailers
